Pain Management

Physical pain is one of the human body’s loudest signals that something is wrong. Here at Reliance Health Services PC, we believe that a life lived in constant pain is really no life at all, or at best, it is a sub-quality life. Dr. Oketokun has spent years focusing on the treatment of both acute pain (pain that is sudden and short-lasting) as well as chronic pain (long-lasting pain), and the underlying causes of each. Dr. Oketokun has seen far too many facilities that seem to forget that pain is a SYMPTOM and not an ILLNESS and therefore under-treat pain and create a climate of dependency by simply prescribing pain medication and doing little to nothing to address the root of the issue.

Whether your pain is caused by an injury, disease, birth defect, or even if the cause is unknown, Dr. Oketokun will treat you with patience, honesty and empathy. Reliance Health Services PC does not give up on its efforts at helping its patients. So also, you should not give up on your pain situation. Here is a list of some of the pain conditions treated here at Reliance Health Services PC:

  • Joint Pain
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Back Pain

3 pain management avenues that Dr. Oketokun provides are:

  • Drug Therapy,
  • Ultrasound Guided Injections

PSTIM Treatment
PSTIM stands for Pulse Stimulation Treatment. It is an FDA approved, non-opiate treatment program for pain management. It utilizes a microchip-controlled pulsed neurotransmitter, which is placed percutaneous (on the skin). The device emits a continuous flow of intermittent, low frequency electrical pulse to targeted peripheral and vagal nerves that have their ends in the ear, to relieve different types of acute and chronic pains without directly stimulating the spinal cord.

PSTIM is battery powered and weighs just 7 grams. It is placed behind the ear (auricular) over a four day period to stimulate the peripheral nerve ends with the electrical pulses. PSTIM treatment consists of an initial assessment and placement session, which is followed by up to 8 additional weekly treatments. Clinical studies have shown that the stimulation of peripheral nerve ends in the auricular region relieves pain and also appear to regulate secondary effects of pain such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Most patients experience significant pain reduction with the initial treatments and also enjoy the added benefit of discontinuing narcotic drug therapies.
